That Time We Flew First Class

I surprised Channing with a trip to visit my sister and her new baby girl in Virginia. Originally, I was planning to go by myself, but my sister had the brilliant idea to invite Channing to come along and help my 2 year old niece get accustomed to being a big sister (not that she needed any help-she is quite the excellent big sister already!).

On the day we left to return home we woke up at 4am to arrive at the airport. We boarded our plane for our 7am flight and got ready to push back when the whole plane kinda just stopped. The flight crew said there was a problem with the battery and it shouldn't be too long before we were on our way. Nearly 2 hours later, in an un-air-conditioned plane we sat. Waiting to take off. Sigh.

My sweet one was so gracious and patient even though it was hot...and tiring...and the beginning of our trip. Needless to say, we missed our connecting flight and were rebooked on the earliest available flight...scheduled to arrive in Dallas at 6pm that night. Where is my mason jar wine?

There were about 4 other flights leaving for Dallas before ours during the course of the day. We were on stand-by for all of them. The first one came and left. So off we headed to wait for the second one. Our names started off at the top of the standby list (hip hip hooray!) and somehow ended up being pushed down 5 or 6 places (boooo!!). I just knew we were gonna be stuck there all day!!

And then an unexpected thing happened. They called our names!! "Simple Mama and Fancy Channing to the podium please." (Or something like that!) Now being the quiet person that I am, I jumped up and squealed "Eeks!! That's us!!! Hooray!!"

Up to the podium we ran with carry-on-luggage and car seat in tow. Oh wait. Looks like there were only seats in the emergency row (which is a big No-No for children). My hope was being squashed in that moment.

But then a little ray of sunshine smiled upon us. They found 2 seats for us. In first class. Say what?!?

You mean we can sit in first class? The land of pillows and blankets...extra leg room and complimentary beverages in real glasses. Where they bring you a tray of snacks and you pick out as many as you'd like. "This feels just like home," says Fancy Channing. Yes, my love, we could get used to this. But don't.

If we had the means to fly first class every single time I'd like to think we'd choose the more humble path. I know it sounds crazy and completely against how the world says we should behave, but I want to choose less to have more. Do you know what I mean? Choose less 'world.' Have more eternal blessings. That's what Jesus did. And since I am a Christ-follower, shouldn't I try to follow in his footsteps? In case you're unsure, the answer is yes.

Don't get me wrong. It was super fun to be doted on...to drink complimentary wine (this tired mama needed it!) and to have our fill of chocolate covered acai berries. But honestly, it is kinda loud in first class anyways.
