This week is Valentine's Party week. Both my children have valentines to get ready for their school friends. And Channing is also required to bring in a decorated box or bag for her Valentine's party.
Now if you know me well, you know that I like to be crafty (Channing too!) and I think anything homemade is just perfection! So when the subject of making valentines cards and a valentines holder came up, I was super excited. I already had several ideas of homemade valentines we could make together and I began to look at Pinterest for ideas to decorate Channing's bag.
I excitedly shared these well-thought-out, well-planned (and sure to be well-executed) ideas with the children. Crickets. They had absolutely zero interest in my plans. Zip. Zilch. None.
Awesome.
So this weekend I scrapped my best-laid plans and fired myself from school projects. I let them choose pre-made valentines from the store (Frozen for her and Transformer Angry Birds for him). I pulled out all the valentines-ish paper and stickers I had for Channing to use in decorating her bag...and I left her alone. She decorated that bag until her little heart was content. I made myself busy with other things and let them enjoy coming up with ideas and seeing their visions come to life. And they were happy.
Did their valentines projects turn out the way I had visioned in my brain? Nope. They turned out even better.
So mamas (and daddies too), it is not too late to get fired from controlling monopolizing helping with your kiddos' school projects. You might even like the extra time off. :)
